Custom Design Knives:
Arclight Bladeworks strives to produce modern and unique custom designs to suit a variety of tastes and budgets. As knives become available, we will work to post them on the NEWS page for your review. Requests for specific knife designs will be considered. However, production times currently run from three to six months. Please contact us for more information.
Please note that stock removal blades are generally produced from O1 and D2 tool steel. Forged blades are generally produced from 1095 and 1084 high carbon steel. All heat treatment is done in-house. We currently use a Paragon KM24D Heat Treating Oven to ensure the best heat treating for all of our knives.

How Our Knives are Created - Forged Custom Knife
Step 1: Assemble the raw materials. Blade Steel (top), Handle Material (second from top), Bolster Material (third from top), and Pin and Lanyard Hole Material (bottom)
Step 2: Hand forge the blade steel into the knife shape (rough forged). The blade is also normalized (reduces internal stresses) and annealed (softened) during this step.
Step 3: Blade is taken to the grinder where the surface is cleaned up, the shape of the blade is finalized, and the blade is prepared for heat treating.
Step 4: Heat Treating and Clean-Up. Blades are heat treated in our special heat treating oven. We do a normalizing cycle to again reduce any stresses in the blade steel, followed by two cycles of heating to critical temperature followed by oil quenching. We use oil specifically designed for heat treating. The blade is then cleaned up on the grinder.
Step 5: Handle and Bolster Material are then cut and rough shaped to fit the blade. Holes for the bolster pins, handle pins, and lanyard hole liner are drilled using carbide bits and cooling oil to protect the heat treating.
Step 6: The handle slabs and bolsters are shaped to the blade. The bolsters are secured to the blade with hand-made pins and epoxy. After over-night drying, fiber spacers are epoxied to the handle slabs and the handle slabs are secured to the blade using epoxy and hand-made pins and lanyard hole tube.
Step 7: The handle and bolsters are sanded to final shape. For wooden handles, such as above, multiple coats of oil and finish are applied to the handle slabs to protect the wood from the elements. The bolsters are also hand finished to either a mirror finish or, as above, a matte finish. A final touch-up of the blade finish is also completed, after which, the blade is sharpened, completing construction of the knife.
Step 8: The final step in our process is to make a sheath for the knife. Unlike some custom knife makers, all of our knives come complete with a hand-made leather sheath, or, at customer request, a hand-made kydex sheath. We believe the safety of our customers comes first, so we provide a safe means to carry and use your new custom knife from the day you receive it.
NOTE ON SAFETY: All of our knives come to you extremely sharp. We, as a company, have done everything possible to make sure your knife is properly made, inspected, and ready to serve you as a premium cutting tool from the minute you receive it. It is the responsibility of the customer to safely use their new knife, and to make sure they have the proper training in how to safely use their new knife. Arclight Bladeworks, and it's parent corporation, Arclight Enterprises, Inc. can not be held responsible for the misuse and/or negligent use of our products by the customer which result in injury, death, or other grave circumstance.
